Gujarat - Kandla and Gandhidham - A Tourist's Guide

Kandla and Gandhidham :

Kandla is a famous Indian seaport which is located on the Gulf of Kutch. Port of Kandla was known to be the promising outlet to the Arabian Sea.

To accommodate the immigrants, Maharao of Kutch had built the city of Kandla in 1947 after the independence of India. Ashes of the Indian patriot Mahatma Gandhi were scattered in the water of Kandla creek. Since then the city is popularly known to the large group of people as Gandhidham, About 27 km away towards the northern side of Kandla.

Kandla port is located amidst the well planned and well designed city of Gandhidham. A group of expert and acrobat architects came all the way from America to take care of the architecture and the designing aspects of the city. Huge numbers of tourists get attracted towards the splendor of the city.

One of the biggest ports of India, Kandla, was inaugurated by the prime minister of that time, Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru on 10th January, 1952. Many in the vicinity know this port as the New Millennium port since 2000.

The free trade zone of Kandla is there right beside the Kandla port. Imports and exports are done through its 15 contiguous wharfs. But, the sad part is that, the earthquake of 2001 had taken a toll on the port of Kandla.
