NH 22 bus route goes to Kinnaur via Theog, Narkanda, Rampur, Bhushur, Jhakri and Jeori. Sarahan is at the border of Shimla and Kinnaur district, at the Shimla side. It is the true gateway to Kinnaur district. Situated at a height of 1850 meters, enveloped in lush green, is the hamlet of Sarahan. The entire west to east horizon is ruled by snow clad Himalayas. The air is pure and clean.
The Bhimakali temple here is also very famous. Sarahan used to be the summer retreat of the kings of Bhushur. The Bhimakali tempe was built by them, and the architecture is heavily influenced by the Tibetan and Buddhist style. The actual temple was destroyed in an earthquake, and was majorly renovated in 1927. There is a new temple beside, built by Raja Shamsher Singh, a king of the Bhushur kingdom. The articulate golden doorway is the chief attraction here. Different deities from the puranas are carved here. The main Deity is also made of Gold. It is estimated that the deity is 200 years old. The temple is 3 storeyed, with double pagodas. The second floor houses Devi Sherawali Bhagawati, while the 3rd floor has Devi Bhimakali.
It is said that the system of human sacrifice was prevalent here. But now only animals are sacrificed a couple of days before dussehera.
There are other temples inside too, like Raghunath of Nagrashaili, Nrishingha of Shikhrshaili, Patal Bhairavi and Usha devi and shiv mandir. Navratri and Dusshera are the major festivals. Leather articles are not allowed in the temple neither are cameras.
The Padam palace, or the royal palace is nearby. It is surrounded by orchards of apple, apricot etc. There is also a bird breeding center at the hilltop.
43 kilometers from Sarahan, 190 kilometers from Shimla, and 74 kilometers from Rampur is Wangtu and the checkpost of Gateway to Kinnaur. There is a PWD IB at Oangtu. Another 8 kilometers from Wangtu is Tapri. Here, there is Kafnu village at 2427 meters, where there is a hydel power project.
The Pin valley can also be trekked from here. The Pin valley national park is also here, home to snow leopard and Siberian Ibex.
Sangla, another major tourist attraction in the district, is covered by a bus from Tapri. Karcham falls enroute, about 10 kilometers away. At Karcham, the The Baspa river meets Saulej.
How to reach: Buses depart from Lakkar Bazar Shimla, and reach Sarahan in 10 hours time. Buses depart at 4.30, 5.30, 7.30, 9.15 and 10.40. They come via Rampur (6 hours). Buses also ply from Delhi, Chandigarh, Haridwar and Kalka. Refer to HPTDC's offices or website for more details. It is located at a distance of 17 kilometers from Jeori. Jeori is on NH 22.
