Jammu and Kashmir: Ladakh - Pangong Lake, Hundar and Tso Moriri



Hire a gypsey from Leh to reach Hundar desert area. A hours drive will reach you to Deskit, an important place of this area. Deskit is the most populated place here, and has all modern amenities. There are good places to stay as well. The Monastry is a great attraction here, from where, K2, golden throne, broom and other peaks and mountain ranges can be viewed. There is a camel breeding farm too.

About two and half hours kilometers away is the Hundar desert area, where you can see camels and sand dunes. It is situated at a height of 3231 meters. At a height of 3231 meters is the Panamik gumpa and hot spring. The Sayak river also flows by. This area is also a part of the Silk route, which is closed now. Take a bath in the hot spring and return to Leh or Hundar.

Pangong Lake or Pangong Tso:

The heavenly lake of Pagong is about 150 kilometers from Leh, and is situated at a height of 4267 meters. The lake stretches across a distance of 135 kilometers of which 45 kilometers are in India, the rest being in Tibet, now occupied by China. Pangong Lake or Pangong TsoThe whater is of peacock blue color, and it changes hue with the glittering sunlight. The reflection of the skies and the mountains are also very clear. Colored stones dot the base of the lake, which is about 40 feet deep. It is also the biggest salt water lake of Asia. Chilling cold breeze always accompany the lake. Seagulls and other birds are seen drifting over the lake.

Starting early in the morning and coming back the same day is possible, but few do it that way. It is generally takes as a three day tour. Where the first night halt is at Tangse village, 116 Km from Leh. The next morning, we reach the lake which is 34 kilometers from tangse village. Spend the day at the lake, carry packed food from Tsangse. Spend the night at tents on the bank of the lake or come back to Tsangse. Retun to Leh the next morning. A popular Bollywood movie called 3 Idiots has made this place even more famous.

Remember to carry 2 passport size photographs with your photo identification card.

Tso Moriri Lake:
It is situated at 230 kilometers off Leh, at a height of 15,200 feet. One has to stay at Korzok village. Hiring a four seater car for round trip will cost you upwards Rs.6000. The Korzok festival held in July August is worth mentioning and attending. You will need innerline permit from D.C Leh.

One can also go to Numa to see wild asses. 80 Kms from Numa is Tibet border.
