Jharkhand: Deoghar


Deoghar (Deoghar means the home of God), situated in the Santhal district (Jharkhand), about 329 km from Kolkata, is popularly known as Baidya Nath Dham. The name of the rail station is also Baidya Nath Dham. According to the Hindu methodology the finger prints on the top of the Shiva lingam is of Ravana. The height of the temple is 72 feet. The temple, one of the 51 sakti pithas, was built by Puranmal.

There are a lot of porches in the temple. Other than Shiva lingam there are 22 other deities are also there. Khirganga dighi (pond), at the northern side of the temple, is a holy well which has 150 stairways. The River Ganges is there at a distance of 6 km from the well. Deoghar, the health resort, attracts a large number of Hindu visitors.

The city is built around the Clock tower, about ¼ km away from the station. The height of the tower is 25 feet. The city is embellished by many small but beautiful cottages around the tower. Caster town, Williams’s town, Bampus town, and Bilasi town are the lately added townships.

Naolakhi temple is situated 2 km away from Baba Baidyanath Temple. The temple was built by spending an amount of 9 lakhs. The temple resembles the structure of the temple of Ramakrishna in Belur Math. Its height is 146 feet. The idols Radha and Krishna are worshipped in the temple. The red colored temple has an idol (white marble) of Balananda Brahmachary. There is also an idol of Charulata Devi, the builder of the temple, at the entrance of the temple.

Tapabon, Situated 10 km from the clock tower, is a temple of Shiva which is the prime attraction for pilgrims. The temple of Shiva is called Taponath Mahadeva. A number of caves are found in this hill. Some of the caves are really dark. The phenomenon of Reaching at the end of the cave is considered to be a blessing of the all mighty. In one of the caves, a Shiva lingam is installed which is located at an elevation of 350 feet. A lot of devotees successfully climb up to the top of the temple. Watching the natural environs from the top of the temple is really an enticing experience. According to a tale Sage Valmiki came here for penance and Sri Sri Balananda Brahmachari obtained Siddhi (success through penance) here.

The temple of Devi Kundeshwari, built by Rammoy Bandapadhyay, also deserves a visit. The deity has four arms and she is residing on karingasur (A devil). The beautiful looks of the deity attracts a number of pilgrims in this temple.

There is an Ashram called Sri Sri PrabhuJagad bondhu Ashram, situated 4 km away from Deoghar, on the way to Devi Kundeshwari temple. The ashram houses a stone-temple of Prabhu Jagadbandhu, a religious preacher born at a hamlet called Dahapara of Murshidabad, Bengal. Even a single night stay at this small but beautifully ornate and green ashram located within a pristine landscape can provide solace and tranquility to the city tourists.

Nabadurga temple, situated in Bampus town, about 3 km away from the clock tower, built in 1360, houses a lot of deities apart from the main deity, Devi Durga. The wall paintings are really astonishing.

Sri Ramkrishna ashram vidyalaya in William’s town, located at a distance of 2 km from the clock tower, is a residential school amidst the beautiful natural surroundings. Sri Ramkrishna, Devi Sarada and Vivekananda temples are built inside the school premise.

Trikut pahar is situated 20 km away from the clock tower on the way to Dumka. If you prefer to visit Trikut pahar by bus then you need to walk for 2 km to Trikut after getting down from the bus. There are three main peaks on the hill which is why it is called Trikut pahar. The height of this hill is 5500 feet. It is an attractive place with a cool stream of Mayurakhi River in the middle of a wonderful natural backdrop.

Nandan pahar, is a small hill at the edge of the town which hosts a famous Nandi Temple. Cross 95 stairways to the top of the hill to spend some time in the amusement park. It also has a ghost house, a boot house, a mirror house and a restaurant.

Satsanga Nagar, a holy place for the devotees of Shri Shri Thakur Anukulchandra, is a big Ashram established by Sri Sri Anukul Chandra. The internationally renowned ashram has its main office here in Deoghar.

How to reach: There are not many trains from Kolkata to Deoghar but if you avail a train to Jasidih junction then you can get a lot of trains from Jasidih to Deoghar. Buses and autos are also going to Deoghar from Jasidih regularly.
