Karnataka: Sagara

Sagara, is famous in the hinterland for the ivory and sandalwood. Holiday makers and tourists who have never seen the process of producing various items from ivory and sandalwood should procure a permission to get into the Government factory to observe and gather the valuable experience of watching the procedure of producing expensive and astonishing art products.

Renowned for the consecrated Aghoreshwara temple, built way back in 16th century, Ikkeri (Sagara), about 3 km from the central part of Sagara, has an impressive appeal to the devotees for its well known mysticism.

Get back to Shimoga town after completing the trip of Sagara. Devotees and temple lovers who are high on energy should take a bus from Shimoga to Malnad, about 115 km from Shimoga. To witness the pleasant and divine sight of worshipping Bettale Seve, pilgrims have to take a walk inside the nearby remote village, Chandragutti. The associated obnoxious rituals with the reverence of the deity are known to everyone in the close proximity. A number of men and women flock to the Matangi temple premise with a desire of fulfilling their wishes after taking holy bath in the River Barda, located at a distance of 4 km from the festive premise. The most surprising and astonishing aspect of this huge procession is that every pilgrim, irrespective of their gender, partakes in the procession without wearing any clothes. The revelers celebrate the festival with fun and frolic on 20th March every year. This is the season to visit the place and see how devotees celebrate the very ancient festival in Chandragutti. A fair is organized as well on the divine temple premise. However, now-days, some local organization are working to stop these nude procession.
