Ponmudi (Pon means Gold and Mudi means hills) is a must visit destination for all those who visit Thiruvananthapuram. Located at a distance of 56 km from Thiruvananthapuram, Ponmudi of Paschimghat hills, situated at an altitude of 1066 meters, is a pleasing destination for its salubrious climate. The distance between the Upper and Lower Ponmudi is only 2 km. Most of the Tourist complexes are situated in the Lower Ponmudi.

The scenic beauty of Ponmudi is impressive. The astonishing Ponmudi is surrounded by innumerable soaring mountain crests. The scattered hills and wonderful surrounds look amazing when the entire hillock takes a bath in the bright sunlight. Clouds fly around the fascinating valley of Ponmudi and touch the towering hills. The pebbly Cardamom hill is shielding the entire hill resort which is hidden in the cool and serene shades of eucalyptus trees. The hillock looks marvelous for its tea and rubber groves which cover the soil of Ponmudi all-around. Plenty of indigenous and migratory birds visit the hills of Ponmudi for its majestic natural milieu. Innumerable animated and colorful butterflies fly in and around the green manor of Ponmudi. The quiet land of Ponmudi, doesn’t have many shops around. Not many are living in Ponmudi Tourist complex as well.

Pippara Wildlife Sanctuary, covering 53 square km of prolonged territory, is located at a distance of 50 km from Thiruvananthapuram. Tourists can visit the place at any time of the year but the best time to visit the sanctuary is during January- May. This is the time when nature lovers can watch the strolling inhabitants like elephants, shambars, Macaws, leopards, different species of common and uncommon birds. However, everyone has to take permission from Thiruvananthapuram to get into the forest territory.

How to reach: KTDC organizes a conducted tour to Ponmudi. Tourists who are unwilling to avail these conducted tours can hire a taxi for a relaxed and comfortable journey to Ponmudi. Buses quite frequently travel to Ponmudi from Thiruvananthapuram. Tourists can enjoy the scenic view of the Golden valley on the way to Ponmudi from Thiruvananthapuram. The feral hilly river is cutting the fascinating valley across. The sight of the valley along with the untamed river will enthrall you even after many years.

Where to stay: Ponmudi Tourist Complex, Government Guest House, Holiday Cottage and Tourist Lodge are the few noteworthy places where you can stay at. The fares of these hotels vary in the range of 440 to 1100 according to their facilities and services. The cottage, midst of wonderful natural backdrop, on the tall tila, is a fabulous place for the tourists who want to stay overnight at Ponmudi. Ponmudi doesn’t have any private hotels. Holiday makers who want to enjoy the vista of the green manor of lingering tea garden should book the PWD bungalow for themselves. Even though the striking charm and astonishing beauty of the place should make Ponmudi a marvelous tourist destination but not many tourists flock to Ponmudi due to the lack of awareness. It is better to hire a car from Thiruvananthapuram and cover it in a day.
