Maharashtra: Khandala - A Travel Guide



Soaring mountains and compelling greenery are the prime enticements of Khandala, about 4 km away from Lonavala. Drive your car through the spiral roads on the hilly slopes to Khandala from Lonavala. On the way you have to pass through the dark tunnels to Khandala.

The quiet tiny city of Khandala is located at an elevation of 625 meters of Sahyadri hill. The natural splendor of the spectacular Khandala would fascinate you on any given day. The city looks lovely for its wonderful natural locale especially in monsoon. It would be an agreeable opportunity for you to touch and feel the clouds.

The untamed water stream of the riveting waterfall of Khandala comes down all the way from a height of approximately 300 feet and hits the uneven surface. It looks lovely to stare at the vivacious waterfall even for many hours.

The zoo of Khandala showcases a personal collection but still is worth watching. The other sought after tourists’ destinations of Khandala are Duke’s nose (the name was derived from the name of the Governor Duke of Willington), suicide point, the Kune point, rajmochi point or the fort of Shivaji, Baga Di Temple and a small Lake.

Take a walk to the sunset point for witnessing a beguiling sunset and make it an evening to remember. Catch a glimpse of the soaring hills around from the sunset point. It would be an enticing experience which can be recalled forever as well.

The Kune point on the Khandala- Lonavala highway is another interesting tourists’ destination. It is the shooting spot of the Bollywood movie called Jungle.

How to reach: Khandala railway station can be accessed by local trains. Express trains don’t stop at Khandala. Autos, taxis and buses ply to Khandala from Lonavala as well.
