Murud- Janjira


About 165 km away towards the southern side of the charming Mumbai, Murud- Janjira, enjoys the refreshing ambiance of Konkan coastal land. Placed on the lap of Sahyadri hills, Murud, is spread across a 1.75 km land on the Arabian seashore. For fun and excitement you can get pleasure in horse riding on the prolonged beach. Tourists, who want to take a dip in the water of the Arabian ocean, have to take precaution as they are not allowed to access some of the parts of the beach.


To watch the sought after historical evidence, you have to travel to the Nawab palace or Ahmedganj Palace, about 2 km away from Murud. The age old palace was erected during 19th century. The lavishness, well-ornamented ceiling and stuffed animals of the palace are worth watching. A rich museum showcases an impressive and imposing collection of ancient era. But, sadly, the door of this astonishing museum is closed due to some legal problems.


For all the nature lovers, it would be a treat to watch the splendid vista of the Garambi falls or the Victoria Jubilee Water Works, about 3 km away from city of Murud. The untamed water stream of this engrossing water fall is coming down with its feral force from a height of 100 feet before hitting the pebbly ground.


About 5 km away from Murud, the riveting Janjira beach, looks pretty for its natural surrounds. Swaying tamarisk trees, towering coconut trees and beautiful palm trees welcome tourists together. Daru architectures, prominently visible on the series of homes at the roadsides, are the additional enticement of the city.


Janjira fort is an enamoring allurement of Janjira. Located at an altitude of 90 feet from the sea level, the pretty fort is based on a foundation of 20 feet. Covering 22 acres of land, the absorbing fort, was built in 1515 by the Abyssinian spice businessman, Sidhi. According to a popular belief, Sidhi had dedicated his son of 22 years to the almighty with the desire of completing the formation the structure of the fort as it was getting destroyed time and again while building the fort. The time-honored fort was delimited and shielded by a 15 meters tall fortification. Portuguese, British, Shivaji and Kanhoji Angre had tried to capture this fort but were unsuccessful due to its well-thought-out protection measures. Sambhaji, the son of Shivaji, had also tried to take the control of the fort making a tunnel under the ocean but had failed. A palace, Darbar Hall, Shish Mahal, Dargah Sharif and two water bodies are there in the 5 storied captivating Fort which is kept open during 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. except on Fridays.


The fort can be accessed by ferry from the Rajpuri creek, about 2 km away towards the southern side of Janjira.


Climb up 250 stairways to watch the holy Hindu deities, Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwar in the Dattatreya temple, located at a distance of 1 km away towards the north side of Jajira. The hoary architectural spectacle of this temple would enthrall everyone.


The Casa fort, erected by Sambhaji, is not very far away from the consecrated Dattatreya temple.


The round dome, about 4 km away towards the southern side of Murud, is a historical shrine of Sidhi emperors. They were buried with all their wealth and assets.


About 9 km away towards the northern side of Murud, Nandgaon, is famously known for its 2 km long sea beach which is well covered with white and black sands. Hidden completely in the shades of palm trees, the lingering beach pulls spiritual crowds in abundance for the hallowed Ganesh temple.


Drive your car for 9 km to access the beautiful and quiet Kashid beach. The cool breeze on the 3 km long sea beach would uplift your spirited soul. Interested tourists should climb up the lighthouse to watch the bird’s eye view around. Another beguiling fort is also there on the land of Kashid. It’s a bird watchers’ paradise as well. Bird lovers would be fascinated gazing at the animated birds of Kashid.


Enjoy the wonderful ambiance of the Kashid beach for some more time staying overnight at the Suman Beach Resort or at Kashid Beach Resort.


Revdanda Beach, about 8 km away towards the northern corridor Kashid, is another pretty beach nearby. The adjoining Portuguese fort at Chaul, however, is in ruins now. The ruins of the historical fort and the primeval church recall the old memories of bygone era.


Tourists, who come all the way to Revdanda beach from Mumbai or from other parts of the world, should visit the holy Datta temple, about 8 km away from Revdanda. Located at a distance of 19 km away from the Revdana beach, the Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary, covering a sprawling 1000 acres of lush green manor, is a must watch spot, especially for the nature lovers.


Even though Alibag is not at all a prominent tourists’ destination of India, but it is well known in the proximity as the land of Kanhoji Angre, the admiral of Shivaji. The name of Alibag had been derived from the orchard (Bag) of Ali Sahib. The riveting sea beach and its black sands offer cool shelter by the series of swaging coconut trees. The enamoring Kolaba fort, built by Shivaji Maharaj in 17th century, is floating nicely on the water surface of the ocean. When the water moves away with the ebb, tourists’ can even walk down to the fort. It’s a nice experience. You also can enjoy a horse ride to reach the fort. Observatory (built in 1905), Jaibhawan and Hanuman temple are other coveted destinations of Alibag.

The heavenly paradise for nature and bird lovers is the Aksi beach, lies 3 km off Alibag. The consecrated Someshwar temple is located near the sea beach and draws attentions of many.


Nagaon beach is located at a distance of 7 km from Alibag. Hire a boat and move straight away to the Chanderi and Andheri fort. Ferry services are available to Mumbai and Mandwa from Alibag during 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day.


Kihim, a calm and quiet destination, about 11 km away from Alibag, would offer you an opportunity to relax and to enjoy yourself amidst gripping greenery. The Kahim of white sands has pebbles scattered all over the beach. Walk along the beautiful beach in evening for a delightful time.


The impressiveness of wild flowers, songs of vivacious birds and colorful butterflies of Kihim occupy the mind and soul of all the holiday makers.

The Mandwa beach, about 18 km away from Alibag, is accessible both by bus and by ferry. Another enthralling beach called Rewas is situated 6 km away towards the north side of Mandwa. The water of the ocean gets into the city premise through a slender cannel. The aesthetic splendor of the Arabian ocean can be witnessed from the wharf.


Raigarh fort:


On top of an ancient fort, built by Shahaji Bhosale, a new fort was constructed by his son Shivaji at an elevation of 869 meters as chhatri. Later on, due to this Shivaji was honored with the title of Chhatrapati. This long-established and historic fort is popularly known as Raigarh fort which was erected atop the Rairi hill. The royal leader Shivaji took his last breath in the entrancing Raigarh fort. His shrine in Raigarh is pulling a lot of people who admire the bravery of Shivaji. It is still really very inconvenient to access the fort. Hence, British had named this place as the “Gibraltar of the East”. Many imperialistic forces had fought against each other for this fort. A lot of its portions hence had been destructed. But, tourists can recollect the old gory memories watching the ruins of the fort.


Other striking and coveted destinations of Raigarh are Tacmac cliff, Lingmala Rockface, Queen’s Palace, Raj Bhavan, Jijamata Bhavan, Punishment Point, Gangasagar Lake and Jagadishwar temple. To pull more numbers of visitors, rope way cars are running in the fort.


The age-old fortress is located at a distance of 25 km from Mahad. Mahad, about 180 km away from the city of Mumbai, can be accessed by bus from Mumbai.

Karnala Bird Sanctuary:


It’s going to be a fascinating journey for all you from the land of blue waves of the Arabian ocean to the compelling greeneries. Truly it would be a charming experience for all who travels to the pretty Karnala Bird Sanctuary. About 61 km away towards the southern tip of Mumbai, the Karnala Bird Sanctuary, is covering 4.48 square km of lush green territory. It’s an attractive and appealing destination for spending a week end along with the ambling denizens of the sanctuary.


Even though the place looks different all together in winters when countless numbers of animated birds fly in from various parts of the world to sing in concert but tourists would be entertained all throughout the year watching more than 150 species of colorful native and migratory birds. Apart from the chirping bids, the sanctuary gives you an opportunity to gaze at multicolored butterflies, panthers, Langurs and antelopes.


Climb up the captivating Karnala fort, located at an altitude of 1500 feet. Trekking lovers would thoroughly be entertained while trekking through the hill to the enamoring fort. The consecrated Bhavani temple is another attractive tourists’ spot here.


The irrefutable fact is that the best time to watch various known and unknown birds in the sanctuary is the season of monsoon. But, it is advisable to visit the lush green manor of Karnala sanctuary during November- February.


To enjoy the natural locale in the best possible way, you have to stay at any of the two rest houses, built right inside the core area of the sanctuary. Apart from these two rest houses, a number of other hotels and resorts are there in Karnala as well on NH-17.


How to reach: Murud is connected by bus from Mumbai. In case of unavailability of direct buses from Mumbai to Murud, tourists can travel to Murud through Karnala and Alibag. Murud- Janjira can be accessed by bus from Pune, Borivali, Panvel, Mandwa and Kalyan as well. You can also avail the ferry service from the Gateway of India to Mandwa before availing a bus to Murud- Janjira from Mandwa. Tourists who want to travel by train have to get down at the Panvel railway station.
