Maharashtra: Sevagram - A Travel Guide



Sevagram, about 825 km away from Mumbai, is a place where the great Indian patriot Mahatma Gandhi had stayed for 15 long years. He came here all the way from Sabarmati as his friend Jamnalal Bajaj had invited him in 1933.

To recollect the old memories of Mahatma Gandhi, his followers had decided to make an Ashram. This Ashram was one of the significant spots which used to conduct various patriotic activities before Indian Independence. The Ashram authority believes in practical education systems. To evoke the ancient memories of Mahatma Gandhi, a museum had been constructed. It showcases huge collections of items which were used once upon a time by Mahatma Gandhi. The primeval residence of Mahatma Gandhi, Bapu Kutir, Kasturba’s residence, Akhiri Niwas, Visitor’s center, the pipul tree (planted by Mahatma Gandhi), Nai Talim, Poyner chhatri and Gandhi Stambh are the other appealing destinations for the tourists.

The Poyner village, about 8 km away from Sevagram, has gained its reputation due to the existence of the Ashram of Acharya Vinoba Bhave, the descendent of Mahatma Gandhi. It is said that Mr. Bhave had changed the concept of the modern political views. He used to collect lands from rich land owners and give those lands to poor people.

The first residence of Mr. Bhave is now said to be a pilgrimage. The ashes of Mahatma Gandhi and Mr. Bhave were scattered here. It was once popularly known as the Buddha center.

Watching the splendor of the very old and captivating fort, would be a delight for one and all.

About 6 km away from Wardha, the Magan Sangrahalaya or the science museum is rich in its historical collections.

A territory had been formed near the dam which was installed on the Bor River. This specially formed terrain is now the homeland of innumerable animated birds, panthers, sloth bear, Shambars, Chital deer and burking deer.

How to reach: Sevagram is accessible from Wardha and Nagpur by bus. A number of trains are going through the Wardha railway station, about 6 km away from Sevagram railway station. Sevagram can be easily accessed from Mumbai, Howrah, Ahmadabad, Dadar and Nagpur by train as well.
