Tamil Nadu: Coimbatore or Kovai


The city of Coimbatore, also known as Kovai, located at an elevation of 443.2 meters, is the third largest business hub of Tamil Nadu. The city is developing its infrastructure and business using the power which is generated from the water power plant, situated adjacent to the Paikara waterfall. The mild weather of the city is its forte. The temperature of Coimbatore varies from 20.7 degree to 32.8 degree Celsius in winter where as the temperature varies between 23.3 degree to 39.4 degree Celsius in summers.

Kongu Shiblayam or the Shiva temple (7 km from railway station), Maaruthamalai temple (12 km from the city), Textile Research Institute, Agricultural Demonstration farm, Botanical Garden, Museum, V O C park, zoological park, Forest College and G D Naidu exhibition center are the coveted destinations of Coimbatore. The Manchester of South India is famous as a connecting spot between Ooty and Kerala.

 Indira Gandhi Sanctuary or Topslip, about 90 km from Coimbatore, has plenty to offer to the nature and forest lovers. The astonishing sanctuary is located at an altitude of 1400 meters, on the Paschimghat hills. The wild life sanctuary is covering a rambling terrain of 958 square km. The sanctuary is rich in flora and fauna. More than 2000 species of plants are scattered in and around the green land of Indira Gandhi wildlife sanctuary. A number of medicinal plants and 200 species of orchids will definitely amuse tourists. Besides 300 species of lively birds, Macaws, Elephants, Gaurs, Shambars, Tigers, Panther, Crocodiles, Deer and wild goats stay in the engrossing sanctuary.
The sanctuary had got the status of the National Park in 1989. Interested holiday makers can cross the border between Tamilnadu and Kerala to visit Parambikulam wildlife sanctuary.

Parambikulam can be accessed by road from Pollachi which is well connected by road and by railways from Coimbatore. The nature museum of Parambikulam showcases assortments of vivacious and animated animals. A reception centre is there in Pollachi to help the holiday makers. You can enjoy the jungle safari riding on an elephant. However, it is wise to walk into the forest along with a guide. The dark and dense forest looks even more beautiful when the sun plays hide and seek with it.

Stay at Moon House in Top Sleep, about 3 km inside the opaque forest land. C V Lodge, Forest Rest House, Varagaliar Rest House and Mount Stuart Rest House are the other notable places where tourists can stay at.

Thunakadevu forest, about 24 km away from the Top Slip, is another fascinating green manor which deserves a visit. The forest atmosphere looks amazing for the Lake which has blue transparent water.  The office of forest department, guest house and tree top hut are there on the banks of the lake. To watch the wild life of the forest, you have to climb up to the watch tower, about 8 km inside the forest. This is the homeland of numerous elephants, boars, leopards, shambars and different species of deer. Tourists flock to the forest round the year. A reception centre for the tourists is there in the close proximity of Parambikulam dam.

Nature lovers can entertain themselves by going deep into the Parambikulam forest. Parambikulam and Thunakadevu forests can be accessed by bus from Pollachi.

Enthusiasts can go to Munnar from Pollachi by road. The journey to Munnar will offer you beautiful and pleasing natural sights. You can stay at Marayurur for a night.

Palni hill, set in the mystic and dark shades of the nature, is famous in the propinquity for its lingering tea gardens which look like green carpets. Located at an altitude of 1000 feet, on the astonishing Palni hill, about 105 km away from Coimbatore, Subrahmanya temple, can be accessed by crossing 650 stairways.
